from $26.00

I was first introduced to Grechetto over a decade ago as a wine rep and I always had fun introducing it to people who weren’t familiar. My way of “paying it forward” if you will. Now, after some searching and happenstance, I couldn’t be happier to now have this fabulous Grechetto to share with you! It’s really quite a brilliant wine, made by an incredibly talented producer, perfect for any number of pairings including Pâtes a La Carbonara (a personal fave!).

The Sergio Mottura Latour a Civitella is a pure expression of Grechetto from Lazio's Civitella d'Agliano IGT appellation near the Umbria border. The best grapes from five Grechettovineyards of the "Poggio della Costa" clone, planted in different parcels, are used to make this outstanding dry white wine. This wine benefits from some brief time in oak to build texture and aromatic intensity, with preserved lemon and fresh apricot.

Sergio Mottura:

In 1933, the Mottura family, who were originally from Piedmont, purchased 130 ha (~320 acres) in the village of Civitella d’Agliano. The family’s mission was to run on the sharecropping system due to the estate’s strategic location near the central Italian regions of Lazio (Latium), Umbria and Tuscany. At the time, they only sold wine on a small scale to the town of Turin. In the 1960s, Orvieto DOC saw a dramatic transition in agricultural reform when the ancient and deeply-entrenched system of sharecropping moved toward stricter regulations on direct management of traditional crops.

At this time, Sergio Mottura took over as estate manager and chose the path of grape growing to contribute to his family’s agricultural success. The estate sits across the Tiber River, north of Rome, in a scenic region known for its rolling hills, lakes, forests and clay canyons. The land offers a rich grape growing history dating back to 1292. Like many other estates in the region, Mottura benefits from volcanic soils and wine caves originally dug by the Etruscans.
